Silla de cuentos........ Storybooks chair

Ya les conté que a partir de mi pasión por la vajilla infantil me estoy interesando por los libros de cuentos antiguos. Y para tener algunas de esas imágenes bien cerca, sin siquiera necesitar abrirlos, decidí que adornen una vieja y bastante arruinada silla que tenía hace unos cuantos años con decoupage.
La pinté de blanco, hice copias de algunas ilustraciones (hace falta que les aclare que nunca podría cortar una página de estos tesoros?), tijera, plasticola, pincel y... así fue quedando

I've told you that from my passion in vintage children's dishes I'm becoming interested in old storybooks. And to have these images very near me, without even having to open them, I decided to decorate an old chair with decoupage.
I painted it in white, made some copies (Is it neccesary to tell you that I would never rip out the pages of my beloved books?), scissors, glue, paint brush and... here it is

Se que algunas de ustedes ya la vieron en el post de mi escritorio, pero ahora voy a acercarme un poco para ver mejor los hermosos dibujos

Now that I've already shown the chair I think I can sit down and read my last acquisition

Es una recopilación de muchos cuentos tradicionales ingleses con imágenes preciosas hechas por Margaret Tarrant -una ilustradora inglesa que vivió entre 1888 y 1959- y publicada por Ward, Lock & Co. Ya les iré mostrando algunas en otros posts.

It's a compilation of nursery rhymes illustrated by Margaret Tarrant (1888- 1959) with adorable images and published by Ward, Lock & Co. I'll share some of them in future posts.

Mi vitrina de farmacia....My apothecary cabinet

Como conté al mostrar mi cocina, tengo un mueble grande que era de un viejo almacén donde puedo ver todos los días mis queridas tazas y platos infantiles.

As I have told you when I showed my kitchen, I have a big cupboard which belonged to a grocer's shop where I can see my loved children's cups and plates.

  

Pero ustedes saben cómo es la vida del coleccionista...y se siguen sumando tazas y platos... hueveras...libros infantiles.... y tuve que sumar otro mueble donde ubicarlos.

Es una vieja vitrina de farmacia de puertas corredizas y el fondo -contra la pared- también es de vidrio, ya que es el lado que estaba de frente a los clientes, mientras el vendedor podía tomar por atrás los productos.

But you know how collector's life is...more cups....plates....egg cups...storybooks....and I needed more furniture.

It's an old apothecary cabinet, with sliding doors and the back side -close to the wall- is glass, which was in front of costumers, while the seller took the products from the other side.  

Me gustó dejarla -igual que el otro mueble y el mostrador- con la pintura gastada tal como estaba, con las marcas del paso del tiempo

I decided to leave the old green paint allthough it's peely

Miremos un poco adentro. Por ahora ubiqué algunos bowls, platos y tazas infantiles

Let's take a peek inside. I put some children's bowls, plates and dishes 

Y después de motivos de circo, camiones y el áspero Brutus de Popeye, pasemos por un sector más femenino, el cuento "Coca la colegiala" (Ediciones Sigmar, Colección Chiquitos, de 1961, alguno los recuerda o todos muy jóvenes por ahí?) y una versión de Heidi  más antigua aún y en inglés acompañan este jueguito tan "rosa".

And after those pictures of circus, trucks and rugh Brutus (Bluto?) from Popeye, let's go to a more girly group of things, a story called "Coca, la colegiala" ("Coca, the pupil", Ediciones  1961)) and a Heidi version close to a very "pink" children set.

 Un par de platos térmicos, de esos que se llenaban de agua caliente para que no se enfríe la comida del bebé, claro, ni hablar de microondas todavía. Ya llegará el post mostrando varios más

In these ones the ceramic plates are fixed into the metal bases, that allows hot water to be poured into it to keep baby food warm. I'll soon write a post showing more plates like these.

 

 Por acá un jarrito con un novio declarando su amor, otro plato de bebé, algunas hueveras, con un cuento "Les belles images" que me atrapó con sus hermosos dibujos. Sí, bastante presencia de gallinas por acá...

Here a mug with a proposal, a deep sided baby bowl, some egg cups, together with a book, "Les belles images" that caught me with its cute pictures. Yes, many chickens here....

Y aunque el interés principal es la vajilla, no nos pudimos resistir a tener algunos cubiertos de niños

And allthough my principal interest is collecting dishes, I couldn't resist to have some children's flatware



Tampoco a seguir sumando algunas mini guiseras

La que asoma en la foto anterior es esta vieja lata de Toddy, en la base está su fecha, dice "1938- Apto para años 1939-40" 

After them you can see an old Toddy's can (a pre-mixed chocolate milk), in the bottom "1938- Suitable years 1939-40"

También hay lugar para el romanticismo en estas tazas con leyenda. Si quieren ver más acá. 

There's also place for romanticism with these cups with messages. If you want to see more here

Y volviendo a lo infantil, bandejas y platitos y conjuntos de tazas y platos

And back to kid's stuff, some trays, little plates and teacups with saucers

 Me encantó ubicar todo en la nueva vitrina pero....sigue faltándome lugar para todos mis tesoros...

I was very happy placing everything in my cabinet but.... I'm still needing more place for my treasures....

Había una vez una Anciana..... There was an Old Woman...

Mi entusiasmo por la vajilla infantil antigua despertó mi interés por sus motivos, y muchos tienen que ver con cuentos tradicionales. De ahí a engancharme con los libros de chicos por supuesto un solo paso y ya, sin hacer demasiado esfuerzo por resistirme, me parece que me estoy entregando a otro objeto de deseo...esos dibujos...esos motivos de niños y animales....
"Había una vez una anciana que vivía en un zapato" (There was an old woman who lived in a shoe) es un viejo cuento tradicional inglés.

My enthusiasm for vintage children's dishes sparked my interest in its patterns, and many of them have to do with nursery rhymes. From there to get hooked with old children's books of course one step, and, without too much effort to resist, I think I've found another object of desire ... those drawings ... those images of children and animals. ...
"There was once an old woman who lived in a shoe" is a very popular English nursery rhyme.

 "Había una vez una anciana que vivía en un zapato;

Ella tenía tantos hijos y no sabía que hacer;

Ella les dio un poco de caldo sin pan,

Y los castigó a los gritos

y los mandó a la cama "

Sí, ya se, la letra suena un poco fuerte, no?
Hay varias interpretaciones sobre lo que pudo ser el origen de este muy antiguo cuento. Algunos hasta sostienen que la anciana sería el símbolo del Parlamento Inglés y que se referiría al tratamiento dado a las colonias -que serían los niños- en el siglo XVII, otros opinan que se refiere a la reina Carolina, esposa de Jorge II y que tenía 8 hijos...
Pero no nos pongamos tan serios, y disfrutemos de los lindos dibujos de los chicos jugando en el zapato convertido en casa.

Yes, it sounds a little harsh, doesn't it?  

There are several  versions of its meaning, some even believe that the old woman was a symbol for the English Parliament and that the rhyme represents its treatment of its colonies -children- in the 17th Century, others think it referes to Queen Caroline - wife of King George II- who had 8 children.

But don't get so serious, and let´s enjoy these beautiful patterns, with nice children playing in the shoe that became a home.

Sí....taza que todavía no tengo....ya aparecerá! pero sí tengo el pequeño bowl

Yes...I haven't the cup yet.....but I'm sure I'll get it! and I allready have a little bowl

Pero no es el único diseño de este cuento. Así aparece en un jueguito también inglés para que las nenas jueguen a servir la comida

But it's not the only pattern with this poem. It also appearse in this nice set for girls

En los otros platos aparecen otros cuentos, pero hoy nos quedamos con éste...

There are more nursery rhymes in the set, but those for future posts... 

Hubo una versión libre en castellano que se llamó "Los niños que vivían en un zapato", creo que con un tono más alegre y lo recuerdo de cuando era una nena....ya lo voy a conseguir... y por supuesto lo compartiré también aquí.

There is a different Spanish version, "Los niños que vivían en un zapato" ("The kids who lived in a shoe") and I remember it from my childhood....I'll try to get it and, of course, I'll share it here with you.

Mi escritorio- Desafío Bla-d......... My home office- Bla-d party

Esta vez el desafío Bla-d es mostrar nuestro escritorio, el lugar desde donde actualizamos nuestro blog o trabajamos, así que acá vamos!

This time Bla-d challenge is about showing our home office, the place where we blog, so, here we go!

Me acompañan los objetos que no me canso de ver. Los que me recuerdan mis colecciones, el jarrito infantil con los lápices, las hueveras alojando una vela o guardando los alfileres para sumar ideas al corcho que monté sobre un marco viejo de cuadro al que le di apenas un toque dorado

I have things I never get tired of seeing. Things I collect, as a vintage children’s mug, here with my pencils, egg cups with a candle or keeping pins to be used with the cork board that I made with an old frame

 

Y como a partir de los motivos de la vajilla infantil antigua me fui enganchando con los viejos cuentos tradicionales se está instalando con fuerza otro objeto de deseo….los libros infantiles de aquellas épocas (sí… yo también quise hacer una taza-vela de Martha Stewart)

But as a result of my love for vintage children dishes I began loving nursery rhymes and now I’m also very interested in old kid’s books (yes…I also wanted to make a Martha Stewart’s teacup candle)

Este es el rincón que delata que me apasionan estos motivos infantiles vintage pero que no soy ninguna nena, no?

This is the nook that reveals that I love vintage children’s patterns and dishes but that I’m not exactly a girl…

Y como siempre en la vida está presente la mezcla, lo contrapuesto, que suma y enriquece. Porque me encantan la flores, el rosa…pero también el contraste del escritorio viejo y “masculino” con la silla pintada de blanco y que también fue presa de mi reciente entusiasmo por el decoupage (no se asusten, lo hice con fotocopias de los libros, jamás podría destruir estos tesoros…). And, as always, mixture is present and opposites enriches life. I love flowers, and pink…but also the contrast between the old and “masculine” desk with the decoupaged chair (don’t get scared, I did it with photocopies, I would never destroy these treasures…). O entre un tintero antiguo y la moderna abrochadora que fue otra víctima el mismo día que ataqué la silla

Or between the old inkwell and the modern stapler, another “victim” the day I decoupaged the chair
