Little Miss Muffet

Esta ilustración de Margaret Tarrant  de la pequeña Muffet asustada por la araña me encanta desde que la encontré

Como pasa con todas las antiguas rimas tradicionales, hay distintas posibles interpretaciones. Algunos atribuyen el origen de ésta al Dr. Thomas Muffet (1553-1604), un entomólogo que escribió el primer catálogo científico de insectos británicos y explican que fue escrrita para su hija Patience  

As it happens with all the other nursery rhymes, there are some possible hidden meanings. Some attribute the origin of this one to Dr. Thomas Muffet (1553-1604), an entomologist who wrote the first scientific catalogue of British native insects and explain the poem was written for his daughter Patience 

La Señorita Muffet

sentada en un banquito

comía su queso con suero

Vino una gran araña

y se sentó a su lado,

y asustó a la pequeña Muffet

Otros creen que Little Miss Muffet y la araña simbolizan a la Reina María de Escocia (1542-1587) y John Knox (1505-1572) un ministro que habría querido asustarla debido a las diferencias religiosas

Others believe that Little Miss Muffet and the spider symbolize Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587) and John Knox (1505-1572) a minister who wanted to scare her off the throne due to religious differences.

Hasta ahora tengo un sólo plato con la asustada Muffet pero por supuesto espero encontrar alguno más

Until now I have only one plate with Muffet frightened but of course I hope to find some more soon

Durante la búsqueda se sumó otra variante Muffet

And looking for some more this different Muffet came home

Ya que aunque no diga nada, esa niña sobre un banquito con una araña tiene que ser ella, no? Y también se me cruzó en el camino una Muffet velador....bueno, dos en realidad, ya que cuando encontré la segunda no me acordaba si tenía la primera o si sólo la recordaba por haber visto en otro lado -arriesgarme a perderla?... jamás! :) -

Because, although she has no mark at all she must be Muffet, don't you think so? And I also found this bedside lamp...well, two actually, because when I found the second one I could not remember if I already had the first or only remembered it for having seen elsewhere -taking the risk of losing it? ... never! :) -

Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

Otra nueva rima tradicional infantil antigua

Another old nursery rhyme

Tom, Tom, el hijo del gaitero,

Robó un cerdo, y echó a correr

El cerdo fue comido y Tom apaleado

Y Tom se fue rugiendo por la calle

Pero parece que Tom no era tan cruel y que la rima no tiene que ver con los cerdos vivos, aunque las ilustraciones modernas así lo muestren. Se trata en verdad de un pastel dulce que vendían comúnmente los vendedores ambulantes en el siglo XVIII, hechos de algún tipo de masa y con pasas de uvas como ojos.

Así nos enseña este diccionario de cuentos tradicionales

But it seems that Tom was not so cruel and the rhyme had nothing to do with live pigs, although the modern illustrators depict that way. The pig was really a sweet pie pastry type, commonly sold by street hawkers in the eighteenth century, and it was made ​​of some kind of dough and had currants for eyes.

Y sí...cuando en uno de mis paseos ví este muchachito con un cerdo bajo el brazo enseguida lo reconocí, no podía ser sino Tom y por supuesto tenía que venir a casa

Sube y Baja........ See Saw

Hace unos días, haciendo un comentario en el fantástico blog de Barbara, March House Books, me di cuenta que si bien los animales, los duendes y las hadas de la vajilla y los libros infantiles antiguos me encantan, las que sin duda me atrapan más son las ilustraciones de niños

Some days ago, while I was leaving a comment in Barbara's fantastic blog, March House Books, I realize that, even tough I love animals, elves and fairies that appear on old kid's dishes and storybooks, children's illustrations are definitely my favorites

esos niños con un vestuario que ahora nos parece muy formal

those children wearing clothes that look so formal nowadays

pero que, más allá de la moda, siempre disfrutaron juegos y diversiones

but, beyond fashion, always have enjoyed fun and games 

algunos jugando en el conocido sube y baja

some of them playing on a see saw 

en estos platos ingleses, hondo y playo

on these English flat plate and bowl

y en el caso de estas nenas en esta tacita alemana

and here some little girls in this german teacup 

Y como ya saben que la vajilla infantil antigua me fue llevando a conocer las viejas rimas inglesas

And as you already know vintage children's china led me to the nursery rhymes

Sube y baja, Margery Daw,

Jacky tendrá un nuevo patrón;

y va a tener sólo un centavo al día,

porque no puede trabajar más rápido

y aprendí que en inglés Sube y baja se dice "See Saw" que sería algo como "Veo Ví"

and I learned that what you call "See Saw" is what we call "Sube y Baja" which means something like "Up and Down"

Esta es una de las ilustraciones que más me gusta. Conseguí la taza sóla un día y hace poco por otro lado el plato térmico, de ésos para mantener caliente la comida llenando el recipiente con agua caliente como les conté y mostré ACÁ

This is one of my favorite illustrations. First I found the teacup and then in another place this hot water plate, one of those that were used to keep the baby food warm, as I shared  HERE

pero no sólo los niños se divierten con el sube y baja

but no only children enjoy and play on see saw

también algunos animales quisieron probar, en estos platos ingleses que parecería que fueron pintados a mano

but also some animals wanted to try, in these English plates that seem to be hand painted

Ding, Dong, Bell

Ding, dong, bell, el gatito está en el pozo.

Quién lo puso ahí? El pequeño Johnny Green.

Quién lo sacó? El pequeño Tommy Stout.

Qué mal chico fue ese que

trató de ahogar al pobre gatito,

que nunca le hizo ningún daño

sino que mató los ratones en el establo de su padre

Esta rima tendría origen en el siglo XVI y en el uso de la frase "Ding, Dong, Bell" en varias obras de William Shakespeare

The origins of this nursery rhyme date back to the 16th. century, when Shakespeare used the phrase "Ding, Dong, Bell" in several plays

La rima original terminaba con el gatito abandonado que se ahogaba pero fue modificada luego con un final más aceptable para los chicos con Tommy Stout salvándolo, enseñándoles también que es cruel lastimar a un animal que no había hecho ningún daño

The original lyrics ended with the cat being left to drown, but was modified  with a more acceptable ending for children and the cat was saved by Little Tommy Stout encouraging them to understand that it is cruel to hurt any animal who never did any harm

Además de la taza, que ya tenía, encontré un plato térmico, de esos que ACÁ les conté que tienen una base para ser llenada con agua caliente para mantener la temperatura de la comida

Apart from the teacup -that I already had- I found a plate with a base that allows hot water to be poured inside, as the ones I have shared HERE

Como siempre, me atrapan las distintas ilustraciones del mismo cuento. Algunas más pícaras y divertidas

As always, I love seeing different illustrations from the same story. Some of them are more naughty and fun

Otras un poco más tristes

Others are sadder

pobre niñita llorando tan angustiada por el gato...

poor little girl crying so distraught by the cat... 

La ilustraciones de Margaret W. Tarrant me gustan especialmente así que decidí sacarla fuera del libro y tenerla a la vista en forma de rompecabezas con cubos

I especially love Margaret W. Tarrant's illustrations, so I decided to take it out of the book and have it in sight, as a blocks puzzle

Si, las otras caras de los cubos tienen otros cuentos, ya se los mostraré otro día

Yes, there are other rhymes on the other faces, I'll share them another day
