Monta un caballo de madera... Ride a cock horse...

Como en la mayoría de estas canciones tradicionales inglesas, que son anónimas y se fueron transmitiendo a través de los años, detrás de una letra simple hay varias interpretaciones. Muchas de ellas tienen que ver con hechos históricos del momento y están relacionadas con la monarquía

Most English nursery rhymes are anonymous and have been argued to have hidden meanings and origins, generally associated with real historical episodes and related to the monarchy 

En este caso se trataría de la visita de la Reina Isabel I a Banbury, una ciudad que realmente existe en Oxfordshire, en el Reino Unido, a ver una gran cruz que había allí. Al subir la colina se habría roto el eje del carruaje y la reina habría montado a caballo para poder llegar.  

This rhyme refers to a visit of  Queen Elizabeth I of England to Banbury, a city in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, to see a huge cross. The royal carriage broke a wheel and the Queen mounted the horse and rode to the top of the hill.

And what about this little girl? Is she going there too?

La verdad que no estoy segura de si está yendo a Banbury, lo que sí se es que aparece mucho en mis platitos

I don't know if she's going to Banbury but I am sure she appears in many of my plates
